Lo.Fi Also Known As Low.Fidelity

Did some digging for an article and needed to scratch my mini- history lesson...

As the appreciation for Hip Hop’s beginnings comes full circle, lo-fi beat makers are right there to serve up that sound and nostalgia. If a listener is to appreciate this particular sound as a subgenre as opposed to a technique- there are a plethora of artists that would comfortably sit in the category: think of those Adult Swim bumps from a little bit ago that were chock full of Nujabes, Flying Lotus, J-Dilla and more. Stones Throw Records, a record label based out of the West, were also able to release plenty of Dilla and MF Doom in the early ’00s that caught the interest of many intrigued by this sound. Again, lo-fi means low-fidelity and is a technique or style that has bred what listeners and fans around the globe have come to understand as another niche in Hip Hop; “During the late '80s and early '90s, lo-fidelity became not only a description of the recording quality of a particular album, but it also became a genre unto itself,” reads an article from allmusic. “Throughout rock & roll's history, recordings were made cheaply and quickly, often on substandard equipment.”

The large ‘n’ heavy analog machines of yesteryear, although coming back into popularity (thanks to things like Korg Gadget app and Moogfest), were clunky and difficult to use. The sampling method made good use of vinyl turntables where the sounds would be ripped from the pre-recorded project into another. These cut-n-paste tactics never completely phased themselves out and for artists that range from Wu-Tang Clan to Sophie Meiers, this approach is what helps makes their music exemplar.

That Nu.Nu: For Now

Welcome back homies,

I haven't blogged in quite some time (just over a year!) but I've been marinating in music nonetheless. I've been blessed with the opportunity to organize amazing shows, host parties with live music, travel and interview musicians I admire. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has ever read something I have written! It has propelled me farther into the medium I love.

VA-based artist, Ty Sorrell, dropped For Now across several music streaming platforms at the top of this year. His sound is an eclectic mix of textured instrumentals, weighty vocal samples and quick 'n' witty bars. Sorrell's growth lyrically is appreciated. From his previous album, It was Time To Fly, a listener could make out cohesive lines without frills. For Now showcases Sorell making better use of time signatures and themes present in the production; songs are much more cohesive and Ty sounds more purposeful in his flow. This makes sense considering Ty Sorrell is an avid beat-maker and audio engineer. Overall, his beat selection, features and lyrical content round his out sophomore album- it's a gem.

Artists are releasing that fire thats been keeping them warm all year! Peep the Ticos2Cents Summer '16 Playlist weekly!

Noo$e Musik, aka Noo$e, hails from northern VA and is part of the group 5enses. His summer single Flex'n Finess'n is nothing short of its own name: a flex and a finesse. Noo$e demonstrates his musical prowess by creating and arranging a light hearted beat. The production value is pristine with percussion lines not overpowering, but accentuating the overall song. The finesse comes into play with Noo$e's flow- the effortless meter of his bars adds to the fun of the song. With the catchy hook and content, Noo$e Musik is definitely a problem. Stay up-to-date with the artist by following them on social media!

Yogamuffin, also known as Kyle Rudd or wax_music, keeps sounds interesting by remixing the slapping single OG Bobby Johnson. OG BOBBY REMIX illustrates the value of sonic dissonance: between Que's vocals and a more serene chord background you get a strong contrast. Add a meticulous percussion line, fat kicks, EQ kills and the production value makes for a fire beatflip. Shoutout to Yogamuffin for the exclusive release! Stay up-to-date with everything wax_music and follow the artist.

IIIAI is definitely an obscure artist, running in creative circles based out in Calabasas, California but hailing from S, Belgium. IIIAI makes use of hip hop bass-lines, distorted vocals,  and calculated repetition to create wavy sonic patterns. Self described as "1/5 of dreamy boiz (Iron Man being a member)"; you can catch more of this producer's sounds on Souncloud and Youtube.

The artist, Lord Apex (also known as senseiapex or Apex The Sensei), is our homie from across the pond; Lord Apex dropped a joint EP, ☯ lord vibes ☯, chock full of beautifully sampled production via LoVibe. Lord Apex's style is eclectic in that his flow meshes with his stitched-together beats and authentic in that his content is relatable. Big shout outs to LoVibe. (hailing from Odessa, Ukraine) who blessed ☯ lord vibes ☯ with textured and well-mastered beats. Peep the project and scoop some dope merch!

2 Cents: Celadon City

Beat Culture and Beat-Makers...

Make the Music World go 'round

With some notable artists and hype surrounding Florida, I myself delved deeper into the scene and found COUNTACH. Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, this artist has amassed a slight following of just over 100 with only 8 tracks.

Originality

This track's cover art is really nifty- all Poke'heads know where the name of the single comes from. The badge on the green background pays homage to the fictional Pokemon city and the track title.

Production

The sound is crisp and unfailing. The baseline is not overwhelming but warm, tying the beat together. The muffled 808 kicks that come in during what is, arguably a nice place for a bridge of a song, are also clean and not overwhelming. All percussion (hi-hats included) are so smooth that the beat rolls along easily. Celadon City illustrates all the great parts about beat-music while leaving the tired parts alone.

Overall

COUNTACH flexes his composition dexterity in Celadon City. What could have been a very flat loop is easily the grounds for a riveting alternative R&B song, content heavy rap, or just a very easy-listening instrumental track. Celadon City will have you bumping your head, every time. Stay up-to-date on everything COUNTACH through Souncloud or their social media.

That Nu.Nu Pt. 3

Went scouring the internet for some new music...

Heja Rames (AKA Jake Barkley) released the ambient track **rshndra** through Soundcloud for streaming towards the end of March. This track is still gaining momentum through the month of April, much like Heja Rames' following on the internet. **rshndra** makes use of textured loops, emotional vocal samples, as well as, an even meter at which the song cresendos into a climax- then rolls to a stop. With original sounds like this, I'm looking forward to more music from this artist that doubles as an emcee and composer. Make sure to peruse Heja Rames' social media and music to stay up-to-date.

2 Cents: ONE LAST GROOVE

Rest In Paradise Maurice White !

A producer borne from the east coast, Billy Capricorn, celebrated the life that was Maurice in his Earth Wind & Fire Let's Groove flip. ONE LAST GROOVE is complex in its building of synths, if albeit slightly sloppy in the vocal sample. The base of the track definitely shows an appreciation for the original song while the beat switch-up in the 2nd half of the track exudes originality.

I'm excited to hear more from this producer in terms of full projects and collaborations.
You can check out Billy Capricorn on Twitter and Soundcloud !
